Analysis Of The Book My Dead Brother - 1482 Words

The title Autobiography of my Dead Brother refers to refers to Rise, who is a young African American whose life is chronicled by his oldest friend, Jesse, through these pictures and comic strips. However, Jesse and Rise are not literally brothers, but they grew up together. Which is why they call each other blood brothers, Rise’s grandmother used babysit Jesse while Jesse’s parents were working. Neither child had siblings, which made them became best friends. After watching an old movie about Native Americans on television, they cut themselves to exchange blood and became â€Å"blood brothers.† The opening of the book starts off at a funeral of a fourteen year old boy who was a friend of both Jesse and Rise. Their friend C.J is playing the organ at the funeral. The boy had been killed in a drive by shooting which shows how the violence is already started in the book. The story takes place in Harlem, New York, which is where the author was raised. Many believe that the book is based on Walter Dean Myers experience growing up in Harlem. Harlem has gone through several changes since the beginning of the 20th century, which is closely depicted in the book. One of the more recent time period from the 90’s to the present. During this time there was and still is a strong gang influence on the community. â€Å"There are more than 300 of them in New York violent crews of dozens of 12- to 20-year-olds with names such as Very Crispy Gangsters, True Money Gang, and Cash Bama Bullies.
